We even got to see the Sparta Township Fire Department put on an extrication demonstration for the junior police officers!

On Wednesday December 15th, the Sparta Ambulance Squad held its annual membership holiday party. This year they were paid a special visit from Life Member Barbara Reiber. Barbara and her husband Bill attended the party, along with their two daughters, to present Sparta Ambulance Squad Member Eric Philippou a one-thousand-dollar award to attend an EMT Training course. Eric was awarded this because of his dedication to the Sparta Ambulance Squad, his interest in becoming a NJ Certified EMT, as well as his interest in pursuing a career in the medical field in the future.

CEO Brian Bollard read Barbara’s biography, highlighting an extensive, accomplished career in Emergency Medicine. Some of her highlights and achievements were: Joining the Sparta Ambulance Squad in 1973 and becoming five-point certified with the Red Cross as there was not an Emergency Medical Technician Certification at that time. She was also a CPR instructor for the American Heart Association, became an EMT when the certification was available, and later went on to become a Paramedic. In 1982 she became a member of the EMT and Paramedic Society which was an affiliate of the NAEMT.

Now a Life Member of the Sparta Ambulance Squad, Barbara was a regular member of the Tuesday night Duty crew, as well as a “roadrunner” during a day. She held the office of Sparta Ambulance Squad Secretary and First Lieutenant, along with helping on the parade float committee, the entertainment committee, and organizing seasonal parties and events. Barbara also got her husband involved as an honorary member that was involved in vehicle maintenance. She later joined the Woodstown Ambulance Corps in South Jersey and became one of New Jersey’s first EMT-I’s riding with Memorial Hospital of Salem County.

Thank you to Barbara and Bill for your generosity! Eric is already a huge asset to the Sparta Ambulance Squad, and will be a great EMT!
