Volunteer Membership

Sparta Ambulance Squad needs volunteer members aged 16 and above with all talents! There are multiple ways in which you can serve SAS and in turn serve your community.

Membership categories include:

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – Make a direct difference

The EMT role has the most direct impact on patient care and is our highest priority. You will commit to becoming a New Jersey State‑certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). You do not need to be certified to join — initial certification can be completed after you begin service. Training, including initial EMT certification, is funded through the New Jersey Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician Training Fund or by us.

Cadet – Start your EMS journey at 16

Our cadet program is designed for young adults beginning at age 16 who want to explore volunteer EMS. Cadets are closely guided and mentored by experienced members, gaining hands‑on exposure to squad life, teamwork, emergency medical care, and public service. The program is structured to fit around school and other obligations so cadets can learn, contribute, and discover whether emergency response is right for them.

Ambulance Driver – Support on the Road

Those who want to help on calls but prefer not to provide direct patient care can choose the Ambulance Driver role. Training covers emergency vehicle operation, CPR, safe lifting and moving techniques, equipment identification and retrieval, and patient transport procedures. This role is an excellent way to “kick the tires” and gain experience in emergency response while supporting our EMTs.

Associate Member – Volunteers beyond emergency response

Tremendous effort and significant time are required to keep any organization running—ours included. If frontline emergency response isn’t for you but you have talents in business administration, finance, publicity, IT, vehicle/grounds maintenance, or event planning, your skills are desperately needed. Join our team behind the scenes to help with operations, fundraising, community outreach, and logistics so our responders can focus on saving lives.
